About this Yasuní tour

Nine days in Yasuní National Park: four with our Waorani partners in Bameno, camping in the forest and searching for anacondas, then five at Sinchi Wayra Lodge with the Sani Kichwa community. A charter flight takes you in. This tour is for people who like long walks, mud and a camp in the forest.

At the Waorani camp you sleep on one of three covered wooden platforms, each with a large tent and an air mattress; sheets, blankets and towels are provided, and the campsite has washrooms and a covered dining area and kitchen. At the lodge you sleep in a cabin with private bathroom. A private English-speaking guide is with you for the whole trip. The charter plane (a Cessna 206) carries up to 5 passengers and 400 kg in total, including luggage, so pack light. Minimum two travellers per booking.

Highlights

  • A charter flight over the forest to Bameno, far inside Yasuní
  • Anaconda search at hidden forest lakes with Waorani guides
  • A visit to a small Waorani settlement and your guide's elders
  • Clay licks in both territories, with parrots and macaws
  • At the lodge: the Sani community, the macaw and parakeet clay lick, the 40 m canopy tower and Panacocha Lagoon

You'll love this trip if…

  • You want the remote Amazon, far beyond the lodges on the river.
  • You are fit and like long, muddy walks and a camp in the forest.
  • You want to meet two indigenous peoples, the Waorani and the Kichwa.

Not for you if you are hoping for a resort: we are a simple family lodge in the jungle, with no air conditioning or hot water. The tour is challenging, with walks of several hours on rough ground; if you would like something gentler, the 7-day tour is a great fit.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1 - Charter flight into Waorani territory

Full dayCharter flight to Bameno and canoe to the Waorani camp

Coca airport · 1 h charter flight · 1–3 h by canoe on the Cononaco River

Your guide meets you at Coca airport, and a small charter plane flies you an hour over the forest to Bameno, a Waorani village far inside Yasuní National Park. Our Waorani partners welcome you, and a motorized canoe takes you along the Cononaco River to the camp, 1 to 3 hours depending on the river level, while we watch the banks for anacondas. Lunch is on the canoe or on a river bank, and on the way your guides explain how the forest works and which plants the Waorani use as medicine. In the afternoon, a first walk in the forest around the camp, looking for monkeys and peccaries.

  2. Day 2 - Clay lick and the Waorani elders

Full dayClay lick and a visit to the Waorani elders

    River 2–3 h · hiking about 4 h · challenging

Breakfast is at 7:00 and we leave at 8:00: about an hour by river, then on foot to a clay lick where birds and mammals come to eat the clay. After rain, anacondas sometimes use its small streams. Then a 3-hour trek through primary forest to a small Waorani settlement of fewer than ten people, home to your guide's elders, where you share lunch and hear how they live. The canoe back to camp is another chance for anacondas, and you can swim in the Cononaco. After dinner: a night walk, or a quiet canoe ride.

  3. Day 3 - The anaconda search

Full dayAnaconda search at the hidden forest lakes

    River 1 h · hiking about 3 h · demanding

Today is for the anaconda. After breakfast at 6:30, your Waorani guides lead a demanding walk to a hidden forest lake, then along its edges and through swamps and small streams, reading signs most people would never notice. Sightings are never guaranteed; with luck you will see one. If the guides catch an anaconda, they hold it for 5 to 10 minutes at most, just long enough for a photo and perhaps a measurement, then let it go. We are back at camp for lunch at 13:00, and after a rest there is another walk in the forest. At night you choose between a canoe search for caimans and a night walk.

  4. Day 4 - Forest walks and Waorani skills

Full dayForest walks with Waorani guides on the Cononaco

    River 2 h · hiking about 3 h · a swim and a last night walk

An early start for the best wildlife hours. We walk to another clay lick, where you will likely see parrots and macaws, while your guides show you tracks, medicinal plants and how the Waorani live from the forest. Lunch is at camp, with a swim in the Cononaco River if you like. In the afternoon a walk of about two hours, and after dinner a last short night walk in Waorani territory.

  5. Day 5 - Back to Coca and on to the lodge

Full dayBack to Coca and canoe down the Napo to the lodge

1 h by canoe to Bameno · flight to Coca · 2.5 h by canoe · Anaconda Back Trail

After breakfast the canoe takes you back to Bameno in about an hour. There is time to buy Waorani handicrafts before the plane flies you to Coca before noon. From the pier, a 2.5-hour canoe ride down the Napo River brings you to Sinchi Wayra Lodge and the Sani community; on the way we look for birds, monkeys and river turtles. You settle into your cabin, then your guide takes you on the Anaconda Back Trail, partly along fallen palm trunks, where blue-and-yellow and scarlet macaws are often about. After dinner, a night walk on the boardwalk for frogs, insects and, with luck, a snake.

  6. Day 6 - Parrot clay lick, giant trees and macaws

Full dayParrot clay lick, giant trees and the macaw clay lick

Sunrise · canoe to the clay licks · rugged hike

An early canoe takes you to the parrot clay lick, where four species of parrots and parakeets come down to the cliff to eat the clay; you watch from the boat. Then a rugged hike into primary forest to some of the largest trees in the area, sacred to the Sani, while your guide explains how the Kichwa use the plants around you. You will likely see monkeys. Later we visit the macaw and parakeet clay lick (entrance included), where scarlet macaws come down to eat clay that neutralises toxins in the wild fruit they eat. Back at the lodge there is time for the hammocks and the Starlink internet.

  7. Day 7 - The Sani community, the tower and caimans

Full daySani Warmi, the canopy tower and caimans

Morning in the community · afternoon walk and 40 m tower · easy to moderate

In the morning you visit Sani Warmi, the central village of the Sani community, and its women's association: the garden of medicinal plants and food crops, and lunch cooked together with the women. Handicrafts are on sale and support the association. In the afternoon a short walk leads to the Yasuní canopy tower, 40 m (130 ft) above the forest, for the sunset. On the canoe ride back along the riverbank we look for caimans by torchlight.

  8. Day 8 - Panacocha Lagoon and pink river dolphins

Full dayFull day at Panacocha Lagoon

1.5 h by canoe each way · easy

Panacocha is a large blackwater lagoon an hour and a half from the lodge, known for its wildlife. Pink river dolphins live here, and with luck you will see them surface. We eat a packed lunch on the water while watching birds, then try piranha fishing. If you catch one, the kitchen cooks it for your dinner. We are back at the lodge in the late afternoon.

  9. Day 9 - Back to Coca

Full dayBreakfast with the family and canoe to Coca

Early start · in Coca about 9 AM

A last breakfast at the lodge, with time for some early birding, then goodbye to the family. The canoe takes you up the Napo River to Coca, and we reach the pier around 9 AM; if you have a morning flight to Quito, we take you to the airport in time. Thank you for travelling with us and our Waorani partners: your visit helps both communities protect their forest.

Good to know before you book

Can I travel alone?+

Of course. Solo travellers get their own private room — we never pair strangers in a room. A single supplement applies; the booking widget shows the exact price when you select one guest.

For the activities you join our small group, and your tour runs even if you are the only guest.

Can I start a tour on any day, and how many nights is it?+

Yes. There are no fixed departure dates — every tour can start on any available day of the week.

The number of nights is one less than the number of days: a 4-day tour has 3 nights. Day 1 starts with the morning pick-up in Coca, and on the last day you are back in Coca in the morning.

What is included in the tour price?+

Included:

  • Accommodation in a private room with private bathroom
  • All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and purified drinking water
  • Canoe transfer Coca – lodge – Coca
  • All activities and excursions with a naturalist guide
  • Rain ponchos and rubber boots

Not included:

  • Travel to and from Coca (flight or bus)
  • Bottled and alcoholic drinks
  • Laundry
  • Tips
  • Optional extra activities that are not part of your itinerary
Can I bring children?+

Yes. There is no minimum age. Children aged 0 to 11 pay 50% of the adult price and we adapt the activities to their pace.

The only exception is the 9-day Waorani tour, which is for adults only.

Do I need malaria pills or a yellow fever vaccine?+

Health authorities recommend yellow fever vaccination for the Ecuadorian Amazon, and some countries require the certificate when you arrive from here or travel on. The malaria risk in this area is low; protecting yourself from mosquito bites (long sleeves, repellent) matters more than pills.

Requirements differ by country and person, so please check with a travel doctor well before your trip.

Is Yasuní safe to visit?+

Yes. Sinchi Wayra is a family-run lodge and every outing is led by an experienced local guide. Life jackets are provided for all canoe rides, and we brief you on the rules for jungle walks before we set off (stay behind your guide, stay on the trail, wear the rubber boots).

The lodge is remote, but our local manager is reachable by phone and can organise help if anything happens.

What is the cancellation policy for bookings?+

Refunds for booking cancellations will be made as follows:

  • Free cancellation up to 60 days before the start of the tour (100% refund)
  • 50% refund for cancellations 30–59 days before the start of the tour
  • No refund for cancellations less than 30 days before the start of the tour

The cancellation policy is effective regardless of the reason for cancellation.

How can we get to Coca (Puerto Francisco de Orellana)?+

Coca (Puerto Francisco de Orellana, airport code OCC) is about 40 minutes by plane from Quito or 6 to 8 hours by bus. From Coca we take you down the Napo River to the lodge, about two and a half hours by motorised canoe.

LATAM and the Ecuadorian airline Aeroregional fly daily from Quito (UIO) to Coca (OCC). Book a morning flight that lands before 10:00 AM; your guide waits for you at the airport.

Buses leave from Quito's Quitumbe terminal several times a day and through the night; we recommend Cooperativa de Transportes Baños (WhatsApp or cooperativabanos.com.ec). A night bus gets you to Coca in the morning, in time to meet your guide. Transport to Coca is not included in the tour.

All the details, including the meeting point and the trip back: Getting to Sinchi Wayra.

How do we get from Coca to the lodge on tour start?+

We pick you up as agreed, around 10:00 AM in Coca: at the airport if you fly in, or at our office and tour meeting point in the town centre (Camilo de Torrano y Chimborazo, open in Google Maps).

We agree the meeting place and time with you right after you book, based on your flight or bus. That arrangement stands: we don't get in touch again before the tour starts. From the office it is a short ride to the river, where the canoe to the lodge leaves.
